Sicher ist es richtig, dass für einen Musiker das Streichinstrument selbst den primären Anteil am klanglichen Ergebnis hat. Die Bedeutung des Bogens wird aber immer wieder unterschätzt. Die Durchleitfähigkeit der Bogenstange für Schwingungen hat erheblichen Anteil an der Übertragung der von den Haaren ausgelösten Frequenzen auf den Klangkorpus. Bogen ist also nicht gleich Bogen. Die Unterschiede sind hier genauso groß wie bei den Instrumenten selbst, weswegen eine sorgfältige Auswahl nötig ist. Was lange nicht für möglich gehalten wurde, gelang in den letzten Jahren: Bögen aus Kohlefasern herzustellen, die den Klang- und Handhabungseigenschaften der Holzbögen so nahe kommen, dass sie Alternativen sein können. Denn ihr unschätzbarer Vorteil ist die Unabhängigkeit des Materials gegenüber Witterungseinflüssen. Außerdem sind die im unteren Bereich sehr kostengünstigen Modelle gute Alternativen bei Neuer Musik, die zuweilen perkussive Anforderungen an den Bogen stellt, die ihn in Holz irreparabel schädigen kann. Einem unverwüstlichen Kohlefaserbogen hingegen können sie nichts weiter anhaben.
